USA snowboarding sensation Chloe Kim kicked off her third Winter Olympics run on Wednesday, February 11, as she aims for history. Kim enters the Milan-Cortina Games in Italy as a two-time defending gold medalist in the women’s halfpipe.

If the American star can complete the three-peat, she would become the first halfpipe snowboarder — male or female — to win three consecutive medals.

On Wednesday, Kim dropped into the halfpipe for her first run in the Milan-Cortina Olympics and did not disappoint.

“So when I stand at the top of the halfpipe, competing on the biggest stage in sport, I do so with immense pride,” Kim wrote on Instagram. “I am representing my country, but I am also representing those who took a leap of faith, who came to this beautiful nation carrying hopes, dreams, and courage. I am proud of my heritage. I am proud of my journey. And I am proud to represent a country that is strongest when it embraces diversity, dignity, and hope.”

On the brink of history

Kim finished well ahead of Rise Kudo of Japan, who recorded an 83.50. Only two other competitors, Choi Ga-on (82.25) of South Korea and Kim’s American teammate Maddie Mastro (81.00), topped a score of 80.00.
