The Milwaukee Brewers have surged to the best record in baseball in July, sitting at 63-43 and overtaking the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central. However, The Athletic’s senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal is throwing cold water on Milwaukee making a big splash at the trade deadline.
The Brewers have been linked to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who would instantly upgrade a lineup that ranks 19th in baseball in OPS (.711) and 24th in home runs (101). The two-time All-Star has 36 home runs and an .898 OPS on the season.
Even though Brewers fans are already dreaming of a lineup featuring Suarez, Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich, Rosenthal doesn’t envision Milwaukee making a blockbuster move like that.
“The Brewers are the Brewers and I’ve written about this at length. They do things in their own way,” Rosenthal said on the “Foul Territory” podcast. “Yes, they acquired Danny Jansen yesterday. They’ve also shown interest in Ryan O’Hearn and other hitters.
“Do I expect them to necessarily do something big? I actually would be surprised if they did something big. It’s just not their style.”

Despite the offensive woes, the Brewers are being boosted by one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, featuring Jacob Misiorowski, Quinn Priester, Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff. And they are well on their way to making the postseason for a third consecutive year.
But if the Brewers want to make a deep postseason run, they’re going to need to improve their offense and trading for Suarez would show fans the franchise is serious about winning.
Suarez, who is a free agent at the end of the season, suffered an injury scare Monday night when he was hit on the right hand by a 96 mph fastball from Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest. X-rays, CT scans and an MRI all came back negative, but he was not in Tuesday night’s lineup.
