Troy Deeney overlooked both Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo for his BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week, despite their performances against Tottenham.

Mainoo was handed his fourth consecutive start under interim manager Michael Carrick and once again completed the full 90 minutes in midfield.

The midfielder picked up another assist, setting up Mbeumo to take his tally to two assists in four appearances this season.

The Cameroonian forward opened the scoring in the first half after finishing off a well-executed set-piece routine at Old Trafford.

Tottenham’s day went from bad to worse when Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Casemiro during the opening half.

Mainoo set up Bryan Mbeumo’s goal with a first-time pass from a well-worked corner routine that started with Bruno Fernandes during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Fernandes did not provide the assist, but he did get his name on the scoresheet late in the second half. Dalot fired in a low cross, and the United captain arrived at pace to finish from close range, sealing the three points.

Troy Deeney spoke about how Carrick has played a part in getting the Portuguese star back to his best in an attacking role for United.

“What a difference a manager makes – being able to be free, get on the ball, go wherever he wants and be creative.

“I think Michael Carrick takes a lot of credit for that, but again, another goal for him against Spurs, another win for United – he has to go in,” the former Watford striker stated.

Michael Carrick’s influence helping Bruno Fernandes rediscover his best form at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim moved Fernandes into a two-man pivot, which limited his attacking opportunities. He dropped deeper on the pitch and had less influence on the game compared to previous years.

Carrick has taken a different approach since taking over, moving away from Amorim’s more divisive tactics.

Instead, he has returned Fernandes to his natural No 10 role. Playing higher up the pitch has not only allowed him to shine individually but also helped build a strong link with Mbeumo.

The results have shown early promise. The skipper has scored once and set up four others in Carrick’s first four matches as interim head coach.
