The Paris Saint-Germain ultras unfurled an offensive banner during Sunday’s 5-0 win over Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique.

A DPD (delivery service) employee was depicted in the banner. On the box was an image of a rat, a derogatory reference to OM fans. Below read: “The Marseillais are delivery drivers”. It was a way of avoiding a sanction for a homophobic remark. DPD, read aloud, sounds out a homophobic slur, one for which the match between OGC Nice and AS Monaco at Allianz Riviera, held earlier on Sunday, was briefly interrupted.

Aurore Bergé, the Minister in the Fight Against Discrimination, reacted, stating that we “must stop considering homophobic chants as folklore”.

DPD, whose brand was appropriated in the banner, have also reacted in the wake of the PSG game. “Our logo was misappropriated to accompany a hurtful message that goes against those that we defend.”

The delivery service’s statement added that it will leave the matter to the LFP’s disciplinary commission, who are investigating with a view to a punishment for the Ligue 1 champions. There was a brief stoppage later in the game for offensive chanting coming from the PSG fans.
