San Francisco 49ers player Keion White underwent surgery on Monday, Feb. 9, hours after shot in his ankle following the Super Bowl.

San Francisco police confirmed to PEOPLE they responded to a shooting at a business just after 4 a.m. Monday morning. When officers arrived, they found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound. They offered aid and called paramedics. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. ESPN was first to report the news.

"A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business," the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. "The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect."

“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” the 49ers said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”

The shooting remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

White posted photos from Super Bowl XL at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where he rooted for the New England Patriots, on Instagram. The defensive lineman began the 2025 NFL season with the team before being traded to the 49ers in October 2025 in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. 

He played in 11 games for San Francisco, including the team’s playoff loss against the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Jan. 17.

White is the second 49ers player shot in San Francisco in the last 18 months. Wideout Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in August 2024. A 17-year-old was charged in the case and is awaiting trial in juvenile court.
