Providence beats buzzer twice, advances in FHSAA girls soccer playoff

The Times-Union rounds up second-round FHSAA high school girls soccer playoffs for Classes 1A-3A in Northeast Florida.

When Kendall Trimiar has the net in sight, she never stops running. Even when the clock is about to run out.

"I kind of already know where I'm going," she said. "I'll have the space planned out in my head."

The fleet-footed junior set up a goal in the final seconds of the first half and scored one herself at the end of the second, helping Providence past Tallahassee Maclay 2-0 in the Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-2A girls soccer semifinal on Feb. 9.

In an unusual close to each half, Providence (13-4-2) netted each of its goals after the scoreboard stopped short of zero in both halves with the referee keeping the official time on the field. Both goals came in the moments before the whistle.

Any timing questions didn't deter Trimiar moments before halftime, when she accelerated down the right wing, fought off two defenders to retain possession and set up Harper Pombier for the go-ahead goal.

She tapped in the clincher off Julia Revels' assist in the 80th minute, after the back line of Ally Thiel, Georgia Pesare, Peyton Cox and Ada Kinsey as well as goalkeeper Kallie Hyde had shut down Maclay (10-7-2).

"We try to play very simple at the back, and my big thing is we just try to minimize our mistakes," Providence coach Michelle Waugh said.

With eyes on the FHSAA final four in Auburndale, Providence next faces a home rematch on Feb. 13 against Episcopal (15-4), which won 2-0 against P.K. Yonge (11-5-3). Sophomore Ashten Wolff netted her third goal in two games for the reigning regional champions.

REGION 1-3A

The road ended for nine-time FHSAA champion Bolles, which lost 1-0 at South Walton (12-4). The Bulldogs finish at 9-10-4.

REGION 1-1A

The repeat bid cleared another hurdle for St. Johns Country Day, which raced away for a 5-0 shutout of Rocky Bayou Christian (9-6-1). The Spartans (14-3-3) are chasing a 13th FHSAA championship in a 15-year span.

The Spartans next play Mount Dora Christian (13-3-2), which came from behind to win 3-2 in overtime against visiting St. Joseph. The Flashes finish at 15-6.
