Browns QBs breakdown, training camp Day 6 | Joe Flacco again claims most 1st unit reps

Three Browns QBs continued to get more reps in practice with Kenny Pickett still sidelined on July 29. Here's a closer look at the day.

BEREA — The Browns moved into their second day of what has become a three-way quarterback competition on Day 6 of training camp July 29. At least, it's become that for the short term while Kenny Pickett is out with a hamstring injury.

The first day, July 28, saw Joe Flacco assume almost all of the first-unit snaps. Rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel did get a very limited number, while rookie fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders did not receive any, but did see second-unit reps for the third consecutive practice.

So did anything change on Day 6 of camp?

Not really, except for the drills the Browns ran over the course of a roughly 85-minute. It's clear that Flacco has emerged as the No. 1 option, with rookie Dillon Gabriel falling in second and rookie Shedeur Sanders third.

Here's a look at what each of the four quarterbacks did during those group and team periods.

Joe Flacco's Browns training camp highlights July 29

  • Flacco ran the first unit offense for the first three team or group periods of practice. That included an 11-on-11 period, a hurry-up seven-on-seven period and then a two-minute drill 11-on-11.
  • Flacco had a deep crossing route to Diontae Johnson during 11-on-11 that was an impressive play on both ends. The only issue is that it would've probably been a sack by Myles Garrett in a real game.
  • The two-minute drill was highlighted by Flacco taking off for a run to set up a field-goal try by Dustin Hopkins. They didn't actually try the kick, but Flacco's run had tight end David Njoku and backup center Luke Wypler yelling from the sideline.

Dillon Gabriel's Browns training camp highlights July 29

  • Gabriel's work was mostly with the second unit, save for one late-game red-zone situation series with the ones in which Flacco didn't participate.
  • Gabriel continued to work well with Johnson, who's started to come on the last two practices. Luke Floriea and Kaden Davis also were favorite targets.
  • Gabriel's two-minute drill featured a deep out route to Johnson to set up the field-goal try.
  • During the late-game red-zone period, Gabriel's series was ended by an interception by Cameron Mitchell.

Kenny Pickett's Browns training camp highlights July 29

  • Pickett was sidelined by the hamstring injury sustained on July 26. He will be reevaluated later this week.

Shedeur Sanders' Browns training camp highlights July 29

  • Sanders was strictly with the threes in any drill where Flacco was involved. He did work with the twos in the practice-ending late-game red-zone situation.
  • The best throw of the day for Sanders was a seam route to Gage Larvadain, in which the fifth-round pick stepped up in the pocket.
  • Sanders' work with the second unit in the late-game red-zone period was marred by a lack of a clean pocket. That included what would've likely been a sack to end the series.
