Who is the Patriots' backup quarterback? Here's what to know about Joshua Dobbs.

New England fans are cheering on 23-year-old Patriots quarterback Drake Maye during his first Super Bowl.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, when the Patriots took the field against the Seattle Seahawks, Maye became the second-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl behind Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins.

However, he entered Super Bowl 60 with a minor injury to his throwing shoulder. While it's not expected to be serious, as he was a full participant in practice in the lead-up to the event, it nonetheless bears monitoring.

On top of that, he's taken three sacks already in the first half of the game.

Here's what to know about the Patriots' backup quarterbacks, who can both step in for Maye if needed.

Who are the Patriots' backup quarterbacks?

The Patriots have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster during Super Bowl 60. Here's a look at the quarterbacks' "pecking order":

  1. Drake Maye
  2. Joshua Dobbs
  3. Tommy DeVito

What to know about Joshua Dobbs, the Patriots' backup quarterback?

Joshua Dobbs is the Patriots' main backup quarterback. He is 31 years old. Dobbs joined the Patriots in free agency, and this is his first season with the team.

He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft, but has been with nine different NFL organizations across his nine-season career to date.

Dobbs first put himself on the map during the 2022 NFL season, when he made his first career start with the Tennessee Titans. Mike Vrabel was the Titans' coach at the time of Dobbs' starts, and that's part of the reason the player landed in New England during the offseason.

Dobbs, who played at the University of Tennessee, has only posted a 3-12 career record. However, he has completed a respectable 62.8% of his passes for 3,346 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while adding 515 yards and eight touchdowns on 110 carries.

Dobbs majored in aerospace engineering while at Tennessee and earned the nickname "The Passtronaut" during the 2023 NFL season, when he made 12 starts for the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings and helped keep both teams competitive amid injuries to Kyler Murray and Kirk Cousins.

New England Patriots quarterback Joshua Dobbs (11) passes against the New York Jets during the second half of the game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Dec. 28, 2025.

Who is Tommy DeVito, the Patriots' emergency third quarterback?

The Patriots claimed 27-year-old Tommy DeVito off waivers from the New York Giants on the eve of the 2025 NFL season. The Giants had released him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline, so New England claimed him and installed him as its third-string quarterback.

DeVito hasn't yet been active for a Patriots game, but he has served as the team's emergency third quarterback through the 2025 season. The 2023 undrafted free agent out of Illinois has a 3-5 record across eight career starts, all with the Giants, and has completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.
