Liverpool's interest in Denzel Dumfries has been handed a massive boost
As mentioned, towards the end of the window, Liverpool actually tried to explore their options for reinforcement.
Both Denzel Dumfries and Lutsharel Geertruida were mentioned as potential targets.
Each of them would have been impressive additions for the Anfield outfit but, in the end, it wasn't mean to be.
Despite Liverpool's failure to sign a new defender, it's clear that they still have a couple of ideas up their sleeve for the summer with Slot being handed a major boost in his pursuit for Dumfries.
A fresh report from Calcio Mercato shares that the 'relationship' between Dumfries and Inter Milan is 'nearing its end.'
This is due to the fact that the right-back has changed his agent and has a 'well-known desire' to make a move to the Premier League.
The Italian outlet do suggest that Liverpool's interest must be 'revived' by Dumfries' agent in the upcoming window but, since he clearly wants to leave, the Reds have been handed a massive boost in their chase.
Denzel Dumfries would be an exceptional signing for Liverpool
At 29 years old, Dumfries is certainly one of the older players that Liverpool have been linked with.
Their transfer mantra over the last couple of years has been to sign young players who are more than ready for first-team football.
Players such as Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez are perfect examples of this, but, even though Dumfries is a tad older, the addition of his experience would be ideal.
Because, even though signing younger players to secure your club's future is often the best way to go about things, without some experienced heads among your ranks, it's unlikely that you'll do all that well.
With this in mind, due to how many Dutch players Liverpool have, it would be easy for the former PSV man to fit into Slot's first-team and he could also help Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong to become the best-possible versions of themselves.
Due to his age and the fact that his contract is set to expire in 2028, it's unlikely that he'd cost all that much for Slot and Hughes to bring in.
Of course, there's still a while until the transfer window opens back up, but, with the way things have gone this season, it would be surprising to not see a fair few changes take place at Anfield once again.
