Recap
1st Inning
After a quick 1-2-3 half inning from Ashtyn Danley, the Seminoles bats helped their starting pitcher. A walk to Marin Heller, and hit off the bat of Jaysoni Beachum brought up Shelby McKenzie. With Heller on third, the ‘Noles traded an out for a run, bringing home the sacrifice fly.
2nd Inning
Danley kept the Hawkeyes off the bases in her outing in the circle, striking out the side on just eight pitches. A one out walk to Angelee Bueno started the bottom of the 2nd inning. However, a fielder’s choice replied Bueno with Makenna Sturgis.
Following the FC, Isa Torres became the second ‘Noles on the base paths, and an error from the Iowa infield allowed Heller to reach safely, as well as bring home Sturgis.
The ‘Noles added on to their 2-0 lead as Beachum clinched the squad’s first homerun of the season, off of new pitcher Carly Brewer.
3rd Inning
Seminoles occupied the bases quickly, after Iowa gave up a single, double, and walk to the middle part of the lineup. Back to back fielder’s choice put an out on the board, and brought in the games sixth run.
The second error of the game for the Hawkeyes proved to be costly, as it gave FSU two more runs.
4th Inning
Up eight runs, Lonni Alameda went into the bullpen, replacing Danley with Makenna Reid. Quickly, the bases had two Hawkeyes, after Reid gave up a hit by pitch and single. The sacrifice bunt gave FSU an out, but put two runners in scoring position. A double into left center field brought both runners home, and putting Iowa on the board.
Now 8-2 with two out, the second double of the inning made it a five run deficit for the visitors.
5th Inning
Reid was able to bounce back from her previous inning, erasing another hit by pitch by rolling a ground ball double play and getting a fly out.
Hoping to end the game early with a run rule, Sturgis doubled with one out. A hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases for FSU. Down to their final out, McKenzie tacked on the second homerun of the game with a grand slam, giving the ‘Noles the 4 runs needed make it a 12-3 run rule.
