New coach Albert Riera thought he would lead Eintracht Frankfurt to their first win of the season in his debut, but his team conceded a late 1-1 Bundesliga draw to Union Berlin on Friday.

It wasn't a match packed with goal chances, but Frankfurt broke the deadlock in the 84th minute.

Mahmoud Dahoud's attempted scissors kick didn't work as planned, but the ball fell nicely to Nathaniel Brown, who lashed a shot inside the net.

But Union hit back just three minutes later. Oscar Höjlund saw a second yellow card and was sent off after he pulled down Rani Khedira inside the box.

The hosts were awarded a penalty and Leopold Querfeld's low shot somehow made it past goalkeeper Santos.

Riera was officially presented this week as he succeeded Dino Toppmöller, but he couldn't break Frankfurt's run of now nine consecutive games without a win across all competitions.

Ahead of the weekend matches, Frankfurt are seventh, seven points adrift of a European berth. Union are ninth, three points behind.

The weekend schedule includes VfL Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and leaders Bayern Munich v third-placed Hoffenheim on Sunday.
