Liverpool goalkeeper Harvey Davies faces uncertain future after Crawley Town recall

Liverpool’s loan strategy during the 2025/26 season has delivered mixed outcomes, with some young players progressing and others encountering roadblocks. One situation now drawing quiet attention involves Harvey Davies, the 22-year-old goalkeeper who has returned to Merseyside following an early recall from Crawley Town.

The move, completed on deadline day and largely unnoticed, leaves Davies in an awkward position. With the transfer window closed and Liverpool well stocked in his position, the next steps in his development require careful consideration.

Liverpool loan picture under scrutiny

Liverpool have again been active in placing academy and fringe players out on loan, aiming to balance development with competitive exposure. There have been encouraging signs, particularly from those operating abroad, but several domestic moves have failed to gain momentum.

Davies was among those sent into the Football League, joining Crawley Town in League Two for the full 2025/26 campaign. Initially, the decision appeared sound. He was handed a run of matches early in the season and gained valuable senior minutes.

However, Crawley’s form dipped and managerial confidence shifted. The situation changed decisively in January when the Sussex club brought in Huddersfield goalkeeper Jacob Chapman on loan. That arrival effectively ended Davies’ involvement.

Harvey Davies loan recalled from Crawley Town

Liverpool opted to act swiftly, recalling Davies and bringing him back to the AXA Training Centre. Confirmation of the move emerged after deadline day.

“Goalkeeper Harvey Davies was pictured back at the AXA after being recalled from his loan at League Two side Crawley in a move that went under the radar on deadline day,” the report from Liverpool.com reads.

“Although Davies had been playing regularly in December and the start of January, he was displaced after Crawley signed Huddersfield’s Jacob Chapman on loan, with Liverpool subsequently deciding to recall him.”

From a Liverpool perspective, the recall ensures closer oversight of a player still highly regarded within the club. Davies remains an England under-20 international and has long been viewed as a reliable training presence.

Training alongside Liverpool’s senior goalkeepers

For now, Davies is working daily with Liverpool’s first team goalkeeping group. That includes Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili, with competition further intensified by the presence of Freddie Woodman, Armin Pecsi and Fabian Mrozek, who has been registered in Arne Slot’s Premier League squad.

Opportunities for match action at Anfield are extremely limited. Slot’s side are settled, and the hierarchy between the posts is clear. Davies’ involvement is therefore likely to remain confined to training and matchday squads at most.

Despite never making a competitive senior appearance, he has frequently been trusted as backup, named on benches in Premier League and Champions League fixtures across the latter Klopp era and into Slot’s tenure.

National League move still possible

With the EFL window shut, Davies’ remaining route to regular football may lie outside the traditional system. Non-league football, where registration rules are more flexible, remains a realistic option.

“There is still the option for Davies to head out on loan to a National League side, with there being no transfer windows as such in non-league, but as things stand, he will train alongside Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili for the remainder of the season.”

Whether Liverpool pursue that pathway will depend on suitability and timing. What is clear is that Davies’ spell at Crawley Town has ended earlier than planned, and the coming months will be pivotal as Liverpool assess how best to keep his development on track.
