WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita Heights senior Jalihn Timmons has etched his name in history, tying the school’s single-game record that’s gone untouched for nearly 28 years.
Timmons had a standout performance in Heights’ January matchup against Andover Central, scoring 43 points. Thirty-six of his 43 points came in the second-half of the game.
“I told him, ‘You’re getting close to the record of 43 points,'” Head Coach Gary Thomason said. “He kind of looked at me like that little smirk, like, ‘Really, you’re not messing with me, are you?'”
“He told me, like beginning of the fourth quarter, that I was close to it, so I just thought I would go for it,” Timmons said.
Thomason says Timmons has always been a fearless scorer.
“He always wants the ball in his hands. Not so much to maybe score all the time, but we know he’s going make a good decision at the end of the day,” said the coach. “It’s really, it’s really fun to coach someone like that who loves the game and just as important, he respects the game too.”
Timmons now holds a place in history alongside CJ Martin, who first set the record in 1998. It was previously held by City League legends Darnell Valentine and Aubrey Sherrod.
“All the hard players that came through the program, it just shows that I really put a lot of work in to be where I’m at,” Timmons said.
Even with such an achievement, Timmons remains humble, giving credit to the guys around him.
His teammates don’t just feel like family, they’re actually related.
Timmons’ younger brother Jordan Timmons and his first cousin Jorelle Hadley are right there with him on the court.
“We played in a backyard growing up, so yeah, we played a lot with each other growing up throughout the years,” Timmons said.
Together, the trio is always holding each other accountable. There’s a strong support system around Jalihn, as he navigates his final season.
“One thousand points is on the horizon for him, and he can take these guys into the postseason,” Thomason said.
Despite the historic achievement, Timmons continues to strive for more.
“State championship,” Timmons said. “I feel like that’s something that I really have come close to in the past years, but I just haven’t been able to grasp it yet, and I’m hoping this year me and my team are able to get it done.”
Timmons is committed to the Hutchinson Blue Dragons to continue his basketball career.
