Seven Giants players and a trio of San Francisco coaches will represent eight countries in the World Baseball Classic, which begins next month in the U.S., Japan and Puerto Rico.
The San Francisco Giants have seven players, including a handful of stars, and three coaches participating in this year's World Baseball Classic, which begins March 5 in ballparks across the world.
Ace Logan Webb will be part of a stellar Team USA rotation that also includes Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal and Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes.
All three of the Giants' expected starting outfielders will represent their respective countries: Jung Hoo Lee (South Korea), new Giants center fielder Harrison Bader (Israel) and Heliot Ramos (Puerto Rico).
There was a bit of concern about whether Team Puerto Rico – hosting Pool A in San Juan – would opt out of the games when New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Houston's Carlos Correa couldn't get the necessary insurance to participate, which would put their salary for next season in jeopardy.
Luis Arráez, the new second baseman in San Francisco, will play for team Venezuela along with Giants right-handed reliever Jose Butto.
Dipping further into the Giants' bullpen group; right-hander Tristan Beck and his brother, Brendan – who plays for the New York Yankees Triple-A team – will pitch for Great Britain.
Team Italy will have two longtime Giants coaches and advisors on their staff. Dave Righetti and Ron Wotus will serve as the pitching coach and bench coach, respectively. Assistant hitting coach Jacob Cruz will coach for team Mexico.
