Is FC Bayern all that different from last season?
One of the more persistent narratives surrounding Bayern Munich this season is that the team has clearly raised its level compared to last year. The performances feel more stable, the structure more coherent, and the margins less chaotic than they often were during a turbulent previous campaign. But when asked directly about that perceived improvement, Konrad Laimer offered a response that was both measured and revealing.
“I don’t think things have changed that much. We’ve obviously had games – last season and this season – which we can learn from and help us get better. We’re still capable of improving, and when you work together for longer, you obviously get better at certain routines. You have a better understanding of what the person next to you is doing. I think that’s worked really well in many games,” Laimer told Bundesliga.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Rather than pointing to sweeping tactical changes or philosophical shifts, Laimer frames Bayern Munich’s progress as the natural result of continuity and repetition. That perspective aligns closely with what has been visible on the pitch. Bayern Munich does not look like a reinvented side; they look like a team that has grown more comfortable in its own skin.
Personnel changes, shifting roles, and a lack of cohesion in key phases made it difficult to control matches reliably during the 2024/25 season. This season, those same situations are being handled with greater calm. Pressing triggers are clearer. Defensive rotations are sharper. Midfield partnerships, in particular, look more connected — a reflection of the “understanding” Laimer references.
The acknowledgment that Bayern Munich is “still capable of improving” is equally important. Despite the progress, this is not a finished product. There are still lapses, still matches where Bayern Munich flirts with vulnerability. But those moments increasingly feel like exceptions rather than symptoms.
Ultimately, Laimer’s quote underscores a truth that can be easy to overlook — improvement doesn’t always come from change. Sometimes, it comes from time. And for Bayern Munich, that growing familiarity may be the foundation upon which the rest of the season is built.
