Scottie Scheffler is rarely short of focus when it comes to his professional golf career.

However, during a lighter moment away from competition he was asked to think about a different sport entirely.

The world number one was posed a hypothetical question about which PGA Tour players he would choose if he had to put together a basketball team.

His answer revealed both his sporting interests and which of his peers he believes would translate best onto the court.

Scottie Scheffler reveals his PGA Tour basketball starting five

Scheffler did not hesitate when explaining how he would build his lineup.

“Starting five would be I think you got to start with Gary Woodland. He played college basketball, so that’s a tough one to pass up,” Scheffler said in a press conference at the WM Phoenix Open.

Russell Henley will be our point guard. Jacob Bridgeman I think is going to make the lineup. He still plays a couple of times a week, so he’s going to be fresh. He is probably going to be the only guy out there that will be fresh for us.

“I think Tony Finau will be the big guy for us on the team, and then I’m putting myself in the lineup as well because I love basketball. I couldn’t sit on the lines and watch those guys play. I think we’d do all right.”

Scheffler’s selections reflected a mix of proven athletic backgrounds, size and familiarity with the game, rather than simply picking the biggest names on the Tour.

Why Gary Woodland would be the star basketball player in Scheffler’s lineup

Scheffler’s decision to build his team around Gary Woodland was rooted in genuine sporting pedigree.

Before establishing himself as a PGA Tour winner and major champion, Woodland was a standout basketball player.

After high school, Woodland attended Washburn University in Topeka on a basketball scholarship.

That basketball foundation separates Woodland from most golfers and explains why Scheffler saw him as the natural first pick.

Among PGA Tour players, few can match his experience competing at a high level in another major sport.
