Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has called upon his teammates to build on their Carabao Cup run and finish the season with silverware.

The 26-year-old continued his hot streak against Newcastle United as he netted a first-half brace in the return leg of City’s Carabao Cup semi-final tie with the Magpies on Wednesday night, with the Blues emerging 3-1 winners.

City will face off against Premier League leaders Arsenal in the final, with the Blues also competing with the Gunners in the title race in the wake of a major revamp of the first-team squad at the Etihad Stadium under director of football Hugo Viana.

A tricky test away at Liverpool awaits the Blues this weekend, with Manchester City in desperate need of a change of fortunes after winning just one of their last six Premier League games to allow Arsenal to establish a six point advantage at the top of the Premier League.

Erling Haaland has cut a frustrating figure in front of goal of late, though Antoine Semenyo has done extremely well to alleviate the goalscoring burden on the Norwegian’s shoulders since he joined City from Bournemouth for £64 million in January.

Marmoush has also been in fine form since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations and after scoring twice against Newcastle United on Wednesday night, the Egypt international could have played his way into Guardiola’s starting XI against Liverpool at the weekend.

In conversation with Sky Sports after the return leg of City’s Carabao Cup semi-final tie, the forward expressed disappointment at not being able to bag another treble against Newcastle.

“I wished to get a hat-trick as well today, but I’m very happy to score these two goals and it gives us, the whole team, the confidence to win the game and hopefully we can win the final,” Marmoush said.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, we’re here to win trophies. We give our best every day to reach these Finals and win silverware.

“I hope we can do it for all the new players, but also the players who have been here – they’ve shown us that every silverware is important!”

Guardiola will have a pleasant selection headache in attack for Sunday’s monumental Premier League battle with familiar foes Liverpool, though there remains major doubt over the availability of club captain Bernardo Silva for the trip to Merseyside.

City could also see Ruben Dias return to action at the weekend after the Portugal international was included in the matchday squad against Newcastle United, with Marc Guehi also set to return to the starting XI after being ineligible on Wednesday night.
