With less than two weeks left in the regular season, some league races are taking shape as many of the top teams look to finish strong.
(Rankings and results are through Tuesday.)
Wooster Daily Record Girls Basketball Power Rankings
10. Wooster 10-8 (7-6)
9. West Holmes 9-9 (8-5)
8. Smithville 11-7 (7-5)
Wooster pulled off two Ohio Cardinal Conference wins in the week over New Philadelphia and Lexington after four straight losses. West Holmes and their two head-to-head wins over Wooster keep them over the Generals. The Knights had won five games in a row before being handed a 63-55 loss at the now back-to-back OCC champions Ashland.
Smithville won't repeat as Wayne County Athletic League champions this season, but they have quietly won four of their last five games, including an upset win over Waynedale last Thursday.
7. Loudonville 13-5 (10-3)
6. Triway 13-5 (9-1)
Both of these teams are in fine form right now as Loudonville are winners of their last six games and Triway are on a five-game winning streak. We didn't get the much to look forward to in the Loudonville-Triway non-league game last week due to inclement weather (it's rescheduled for Feb 14), yet both are in the hunt for league titles.
If Loudonville wins on Wednesday against Mount Gilead, they will share the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference title with Centerburg. Triway, on the other hand, are 9-1 in Principals Athletic Conference with their one loss being to league leaders Northwest. Triway get 16-1 Northwest at home on Wednesday and a win there could set a chance to be co-league champs by seasons end.
5. Waynedale 14-6 (7-5)
Waynedale dropped two tight games in WCAL play last week, losing by three points in their second loss on the season to Chippewa and were upset at home by three points to a surging Smithville team. They took down Rittman handily in their last game and sit in fourth place in the WCAL, with their last two games being against Hillsdale and Norwayne.
4. Dalton 13-5 (8-3)
Dalton fared well against Hillsdale (66-31 win), but lost their big game against Chippewa by 18 points on Saturday. It was the Bulldogs' second defeat to Chippewa this season and pushed them down a little in the WCAL title race. Dalton are currently third in the standings and they would need to beat Norwayne on Thursday to stay in this super tight league race.
3. Chippewa 13-5 (10-1)
Chippewa kept up their pleasant play after defeating Dalton for the second time on Saturday, and along with that have two wins over top-four league team Waynedale. The Chipps get a Smithville team on Wednesday that's playing well and will travel to Akron to face the No. 5 ranked team in Division III, according to MaxPreps, in St. Vincent-St. Mary. Yet, it's starting to look more and more that the Feb. 14 game against the next team will be for the WCAL title.
2. Norwayne 15-2 (10-1)
Norwayne's tough four-game stretch against Dalton, Loudonville, Waynedale and Chippewa starts on Thursday at home versus Dalton. They sit tied for first in the WCAL (Norwayne beat Chippewa in their first game), so winning out versus the Bulldogs and Golden Bears to set up a likely winner-take-all situation for the league title with Chippewa on Feb. 14 is in play for the No. 7 ranked team in Division V.
1. Hiland 14-5 (10-1)
The No. 11 ranked team in Division VI have just one scheduled regular season game left (at West Holmes on Wednesday) and then off to the postseason — unless they add a few more games before the postseason. Hiland looks like they might be heading towards being co-league winners in the Inter Valley South with Tuscarawas Valley (split the two meetings with Tusky Valley).
