TOPEKA (KSNT) — The number of registered sports officials, including referees and umpires, has dropped by nearly 30% nationwide, according to a 2023 National Association of Sports Officials survey. The decline is creating challenges for local leagues and making it harder for cities like Topeka to host large-scale national tournaments.

To address the issue, the Southwest Youth Athletic Association (SYAA) is recruiting high school students to become umpires through a new four-week training course.

Mike Bell, executive director of the Topeka Area Sports Commission, says the program could have a big impact on both local leagues and the city’s ability to attract major sporting events.

“It gives those tournaments, and really these summer leagues, that vital resource they need as an umpire,” said Bell. “And then again, it will help the Topeka Area Sports Commission when we bring in these national events.”

Organizers say they are seeking a specific type of participant.

“What we’re looking to is invest in the youth and get that next generation of umpires and officials,” said Bell. “We want to have folks that would be some basic knowledge of what it is, but really, it’s the love of the game and wanting to be part of that.”

Classes will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Play It Again Sports inside the Fairlawn Plaza Mall. Those enrolled will receive free equipment and materials during each class to support their success as umpires. Registration is open through Feb. 15. Space is limited, so sign up now.
