A new trade rumor offers the Detroit Pistons a path to make a bold trade for a three-time All-Star that would be a great fit for their front court as they attempt a run to the NBA Finals this spring.
This has been another big season for the Pistons. After a magical worst-to-first turnaround in the 2024-25 season, Detroit has taken another big leap forward and has owned the best record in the East for much of the season. They are also only two games behind the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder for the best record in the NBA.
So, at a period in the season where many playoff contenders are looking to make a big move to improve their roster for the second half, team president Trajan Langdon can make the case to stand pat and forego a big addition before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. Even if there are some who question whether they can overcome the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics in the playoffs.
The Pistons have the trade chips and salary cap space to be in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes. However, there are no indications they have any interest in such a deal. But a different star who would be a fantastic addition to the roster is available, and at a far lower rate than the Milwaukee Bucks star.
Should the Pistons target a Julius Randle trade?
According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Sports, the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to reshuffle their roster to open up cap space and acquire future first-round picks to acquire Antetokounmpo. And three-time All-Star Julius Randle is one of the players they are willing to move.
On Tuesday, the Pistons were part of a three-team trade with the Timberwolves that landed them Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric. The deal added an intriguing backcourt option with top star Cade Cunningham and a good backup behind Jalen Duren.
However, they could use an upgrade over Tobias Harris, and Randle would certainly be that. He is a far better scorer and rebounder who can also stretch the floor like Harris. Furthermore, the two years and $68 million left on Randle’s contract are not a bad number to add.
A deal would probably cost Detroit a first-round pick. But that seems like a fair cost for what Randle can bring to the team and how close they are to a championship.
