The Darius Garland Era Begins in Inglewood

The Los Angeles Clippers made a stunning move ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, sending James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Darius Garland and a second-round pick in what ESPN's Shams Charania is calling one of the biggest swaps in recent deadline history.

The trade comes as a surprise considering the Clippers (23-26) had gone 17-4 since Dec. 20 and appeared to be rounding into form, with Harden playing a huge part in that impressive turnaround by carrying the team through injuries early in the season and keeping them afloat when it mattered the most.

He's been averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists per game while helping the team climb back into the Western Conference playoff picture, and the Cavaliers (30-21) are now hoping the move will boost their title chances after falling off from last season's 64-win campaign.

Why the Clippers Pulled the Trigger

For Los Angeles, the math here is pretty simple: Harden is 36 years old and was looking for a new deal, while Garland is a 26-year-old two-time All-Star who gives them something they desperately needed in a future.

The Clippers entered this season with the NBA's oldest roster and no control over their next four first-round picks, so their championship window with this core had likely closed and getting younger became a priority.

Garland averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists last season while shooting 40% from three, and he's under contract through 2027-28.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported that Harden had recently spoken about feeling "blessed" to play in his hometown of Los Angeles, but she noted this was a business decision for all involved and that everyone knew how tradeable the partial guarantee on the second year of Harden's contract made him.

The structure of his deal gave him veto power over any trade, but he worked with the team to find a landing spot that suited both sides.

What This Means for the Clippers

Garland has dealt with toe injuries that limited him to just 26 games this season, and there are concerns about his durability going forward since he hasn't played since Jan. 14 due to a Grade 1 sprain of his right big toe.

Still, when healthy, he's shown he can be one of the better point guards in the league.

Head coach Tyronn Lue was asked about the situation before Monday's loss to Philadelphia and said Harden "means a lot" to the franchise, adding when asked if he hoped Harden would remain past the deadline: "Who wouldn't want to have James Harden?"

Looking Ahead

The timing creates an interesting wrinkle since Cleveland coincidentally plays the Clippers on Wednesday night at Intuit Dome, and Garland traveled with the team to Los Angeles knowing both players will need to pass physicals before the trade becomes official.

For Los Angeles, this move signals a shift in direction, and instead of going all-in with an aging roster, they're betting on Garland to help them compete now while also being part of the next chapter of the franchise.
