Bowen Hardman and Tavari Johnson lead the way for Akron men's basketball in a MAC road win by the Zips over Eastern Michigan.
Bowen Hardman made a 3-point shot with 8.1 seconds remaining in the second half to propel the University of Akron men's basketball team to a 66-64 win at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
Akron's Tavari Johnson recorded the assist on Hardman's game-winning shot. Eastern Michigan had two shot attempts in the closing seconds as Gregory Lawson missed a jumper and Merritt Alderink missed in a tip-in layup.
Johnson made two free throws to give Akron a 63-59 lead with 2:11 to go. EMU scored the next five points with Jon Sanders making a layup, Lawson making two free throws and Mohammad Habhab making one free throw to make it 64-63 with 20 seconds left.
The Zips (19-4, 10-1 Mid-American Conference) had four players score in double figures, led by Johnson, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Hardman scored 12 points, Evan Mahaffey contributed 12 points, three rebounds and two steals and Sharron Young totaled 12 points, three steals and two rebounds.
Akron also received solid efforts from Amani Lyles (four points, eight rebounds) and Eric Mahaffey (four points, seven rebounds, two blocks).
Lawson paced the Eagles (9-14, 3-8) with 17 points and four rebounds. Addison Patterson (16 points, six rebounds), Sanders (11 points, four assists) and Habhab (11 points, seven rebounds).
Next Akron Zips basketball game
The Zips take a break from conference play when they play at Troy in the second round of the MAC-SBC Challenge this weekend. The game is at 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7. Troy won the Sun Belt Conference a year ago, while Akron is the reigning MAC champ.
