Gary Neville is covering Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi final second leg against Arsenal, and he had some very interesting thoughts about one Blues player who had impressed him.

Joao Pedro has been in a strong run recently, finally finding his scoring form midway through his first season at Chelsea. Today he is leading the line for a very defensive Blues setup, giving him not a lot to work with. Yet he’s doing a lot with a little.

William Saliba and Gabriel are the best (and the biggest) central defensive partnership in the league, and JP is giving them a hard time.

Gary Neville picks on Joao Pedro

“I’ve been so impressed with Joao Pedro. He’s got Saliba. His hold up play is allowing Chelsea up the pitch,” Neville said on commentary. He added that any youngster wanting to learn how to hold defenders off as a forward should watch a video of the Brazilian’s first half performance.

Their reporter Nick Wright added even more detail to his compliments:

“Joao Pedro has had some very good moments up against Saliba. Interesting to see him leading the line rather than Delap, who is currently hugging the right-hand touchline.”

We’ve seen far too many games this season where the ball hasn’t stuck to JP, and so it’s superb to see him manage it against the most physically dominant team in the league. Now he just needs to keep up his hot streak with a goal.

In other news…

Reece James’ absence for this game raised a lot of questions, and we’re sure Liam Rosenior will be asked about them after full time. The Athletic are saying that it’s just a question of being rested.

David Datro Fofana has completed a loan move to Strasbourg, a risk without doubt given his patchy loan history.
