UFC 296: Rakhmonov v Thompson

Big things are happening in the official UFC rankings, updated in the wake of last weekend’s UFC 325 event in Australia. Reigning featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski climbed the pound-for-pound chart with his victory over Diego Lopes in the UFC 325 main event, while Benoit Saint Denis jumped to No. 5 at lightweight by disposing of Dan Hooker. That sent former interim title challenger Paddy Pimblett down one spot to No. 6.

In addition, Shavkat Rakhmonov was removed from the welterweight rankings following a second injury.

“He was eliminated at our title eliminator,” No. 2-ranked Ian Garry wrote on X, referring to their UFC 310 bout that “Nomad” won by decision. The loss of the undefeated Rakhmonov allowed the recently-booked Michael Page to sneak back into the Top 15 after a pit stop at middleweight.

“MVP cleverly ran away from the fight with me and jumped in the top,” Yaroslav Amavov wrote on X, for reasons nobody can explain.

Here’s how the rankings are compiled, at least until AI takes over:

Rankings are generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).
