The debate surrounding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to fade, even years after the two icons stopped competing in the same league.

While fans and pundits continue to argue over who deserves the crown, former Real Madrid defender Ezequiel Garay has now added his own voice to the discussion.

Garay, who shared the pitch with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and later crossed paths with Messi at the international level, recently revisited the topic during an interview on DAZN

His comments have quickly drawn attention due to the clarity with which he ranked the two superstars.

Who did he pick?

As such, Garay made it clear that he does not see the comparison as controversial, but rather as an honest reflection of his personal experience playing alongside both players at the highest level.

Speaking openly about who left the biggest impression on him, the former defender said,

“No, (Cristiano is not the best player I’ve ever played with). Number 1 is Leo and number 2 is Cristiano, without a doubt.

“They are two very different players, but the one who has surprised me the most is Leo. I have been fortunate enough to play with both of them, and Leo is something else.”

That said, Garay was quick to balance his praise by acknowledging the discipline and work ethic that have defined Ronaldo’s career.

While Messi may have impressed him the most in pure football terms, the Argentine defender stressed that Ronaldo’s success is built on relentless effort and sacrifice.

To underline that point, Garay referred to a well-known story often shared by Carlos Tevez, explaining how Ronaldo’s professionalism sets him apart.

“The story that Carlitos Tevez always tells is true. He’s the first to arrive at 6 a.m. and the last to leave.

“He starts his routine, his gym session, his warm-up, his physio… all that to always be in the best condition,” he concluded.
