Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that she will keep on fighting after watching her side go down 5-1 to Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The reigning Barclays Women’s Super League champions were demolished by a Manchester City side who now look sure to win the title themselves this season.

It is very much unfamiliar territory for The Blues. They have suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time in more than 10 years. When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor called for some unity as the club look to turn things around.

“I think for me, after having this tough result, I still have the same mindset,” Bompastor said. “I think we just focus on ourselves because as you could see, the result is tough, but there are reasons to explain that.

“I think the staff and the players, we have to stay together and make sure we understand where we are. We need to focus on how much we need to work out to get back to a better position. It’s probably the first time I’m facing this situation, it’s life and it’s football.”

The pressure is increasing on Bompastor with Chelsea’s title hopes in tatters. The Frenchwomen offered her thoughts on her position potentially being under threat.

She said “In all honesty, I think in the club, if people think I’m not the right person to stay for this job, I’ll be happy to go if they think that’s the right thing, but I will never give up. I know that sometimes you can be in this situation in football, but I will always fight, however, the institution in Chelsea is a lot more important than myself.”

Bompastor also went on to briefly discuss the options in her squad. She indicated that it’s a difficult time for Chelsea with the team potentially lacking depth when it comes to impact players.

She said “As you can see, maybe the squad is not the same as last season. I think a lot of people talk about Chelsea being an example in terms of having a lot of different profiles who can bring a big impact when they come in the game. I think right now, we are probably not in that place. I’m not saying it will explain everything, but probably also being in that position doesn’t help.

“Of course, as a manager, I will always assume the results of this team. I also need to focus on what are the solutions for me to bring to this team, for us to be in a lot better place.”

Chelsea are next in action on Sunday when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
