Astros linked to former Cy Young Award winner at the trade deadline

Sandy Alcantara could be an option for the Astros at the deadline

The Houston Astros will be in the market for plenty of starting pitching help at the trade deadline. With plenty of injuries to their staff, Houston will explore its options to help weather the storm.

One name that has come up recently is a former NL Cy Young Award winner, Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins. After missing all of the 2024 season due to Tommy John Surgery, Alcantara has struggled to find his footing in 2025, pitching to a 6.66 ERA in 20 starts this season, a far fall from grace when he won the Cy Young Award in 2022 thanks to a 14-9 record with a 2.28 ERA.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan have indicated that the Astros are considered a top fit for Alcantara’s services should the Marlins opt to trade him.

“Alcantara was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in 2022, winning the NL Cy Young unanimously. He was more solid than spectacular in 2023 and missed 2024 with Tommy John surgery,” they wrote. “He has been tinkering this season to try to get his pitch mix and locations right in hopes of regaining his former glory. His 6.66 ERA is frightening, and with the Marlins still valuing him as a top starter, they could hold onto him until the winter.”

Alcantara still has two full seasons of team control remaining on his contract beyond this season, so the Marlins would likely need to be blown away to deal him. However, the Astros injury situation could make them desperate to pull off such a deal.

Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown have held down the fort up to this point, but the team is still without numerous key pitchers including Lance McCullers Jr., Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti, J.P. France, Luis Garcia, Hayden Wesneski, and Cristain Javier.
