Chewed up and spat out
Now that was impressive.
The #6 Tigers of LSU (21-2, 7-2) picked up its seventh straight conference win and beat the absolute hell out of #24 Alabama (19-4, 5-3) along the way by a cool 40 points.
For the 12th time this season, LSU cracked the century mark. That’s a new SEC record and the fourth most by a team in NCAA history.
Everyone ate on this fine Sunday afternoon. As a team LSU shot 56 percent from the field and knocked down 10 three pointers, and every single player that took the floor for LSU scored. Sophomore point guard Jada Richard led all players with 16 points and was a perfect 5-5 from the floor. Her only miss of the afternoon came at the free throw line.
The usual suspects of this LSU women’s team, Mikaylah Williams and Flau’Jae Johnson, were able to kick their feet up and rest earlier than normal. Williams only played 25 minutes, while Johnson played 21. Neither Williams nor Johnson needed to play their usual amount of minutes to dispatch of the Tide because the future of the program was on full display.
ZaKiyah Johnson had the best game of her freshman season with 15 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Fellow freshmen Bella Hines and Divine Bourrage combined for 11 points, while MiLaysia Fulwiley was, once again, tremendous off the bench. Fulwiley had 10 points, four assists, and three rebounds in 26 minutes, and hit 3-7 threes along the way.
LSU didn’t just finesse their way to a 40-point win, they did all the little things to completely overwhelm Alabama. They turned over Alabama 17 times and converted them into 24 points; they were +16 points in the paint advantage; and don’t look now, but LSU is starting to find a rebounding advantage. Today the Tigers were +15 on the glass, and Kate Koval is coming into her own as of late. Koval got the start and grabbed eight points and nine boards in 14 minutes.
February is going to be a challenging month for LSU, but the Tigers passed its first test with flying colors. Today’s game against Alabama was the first of seven games this month for the Tigers, and five are going to be against a ranked opponent.
Up next LSU will play in its biggest game of the season to date as the Tigers head to Austin Thursday night for a rematch against #4 Texas (8:00 P.M., ESPN). LSU beat Texas 70-65 in Baton Rouge on January 11 and tries to go for the season sweep.
