Manchester United are in the market for a new midfielder this year, and a move cannot be ruled out before the end of the January transfer window. The Red Devils have swiftly turned their season around following Michael Carrick’s appointment as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The Englishman has managed two wins in his first two games against Manchester City and Arsenal, helping United climb to fourth in the Premier League table after 23 games. The Red Devils have overseen a quiet winter transfer window, with the club reportedly confident that Carrick has the resources to secure Champions League qualification.

Meanwhile, plans are being put in place for the summer, when the English giants are expected to revamp their midfield. Premier League-proven candidates such as Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson are at the top of United’s wish list, as INEOS found success with this strategy while reinforcing the attack last summer.

However, several players from abroad have also been linked with the job, including Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka.

Dropping out of favour at the Allianz Arena

Goretzka’s future at the Allianz Arena is under the scanner after falling out of favour under manager Vincent Kompany. The German midfielder, who joined the Bavarians from Schalke in 2018, was once an integral part of the starting XI but is no longer indispensable to the club.

This season, Goretzka has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga champions, contributing one goal.

However, the 30 year old’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he has not signed a new deal yet. An exit this summer remains a real possibility, although a previous report relayed by The Peoples Person states that United are considering a move for Goretzka in January.

With the window set to close on Monday, links to Old Trafford refuse to go away, and acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the situation.

United not in talks for Goretzka

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano insisted that the Premier League giants are not in talks to sign Goretzka at the moment. He said: “Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent this summer and will have plenty of options. My understanding is that Manchester United will go very big for midfielders in the summer – trust me, very big.”

“They could sign one or maybe two midfielders. United will go very strong for midfielders. Casemiro is leaving, but at the moment, I am not aware of anything advanced for Goretzka.”

Goretzka has registered 47 goals and 48 assists in 292 appearances for Bayern Munich to date, winning six Bundesliga titles and one Champions League trophy, among others.

Final Thoughts

Although Goretzka’s experience makes him a lucrative option for United, especially given that Casemiro will leave this summer, the club are unlikely to deviate from their Premier League-centric transfer strategy. Meanwhile, The Peoples Person recently relayed a report stating that the Red Devils are ready to break their transfer record to secure the signature of Brighton & Hove Albion star Baleba, who could be the Brazilian’s replacement.
