Christoph Freund, sporting director: “Javier Fernández unfortunately wasn’t able to play much in 2025 due to a long injury but is now 100 percent fit and ready for senior football. He’s a very good player, a physically strong midfielder who can lead from the front in any team. He’s also showed in the Youth League that he can make a statement, even when his team goes behind. He’s someone who takes things in his own hands. We’re looking forward to the coming years with him and are sure he’ll gain valuable experience at Nürnberg.”Javier Fernández: “I feel very good in Munich and am excited to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world in the coming years. Now I want to use my chance at Nürnberg to gain match practice in Bundesliga 2 and develop further.”
After weeks of speculation, Bayern Munich has officially send talented, young midfielder Javier Fernández to 1. FC Nürnberg on a loan that will extend for the rest of the 2025/26 season.
Fernández was a heralded pick up from Atlético Madrid in 2023, but has spend much of his last two seasons injured and unable to play. There is no word on whether or not . FC Nürnberg will retain an option to buy in the deal:
FC Nürnberg issued a release on the move:
Joti Chatzialexiou, Board Member for Sport: “Javier is an exciting talent in his position. It’s no coincidence that he’s already had several opportunities to train with the first team and play for the Spanish youth national teams. We want to give him the chance here in Nuremberg to demonstrate his abilities for the first time in the 2. Bundesliga and we’re looking forward to having him.”
Javier Fernández: “I am looking forward to my upcoming time at FCN, where I want to continue learning and get used to a new level and intensity compared to the Regionalliga.”
Fernández has an assist in three games across all competitions this season for Bayern Munich II, while totaling 100 minutes in those appearances. Of course, Fernández also just recently returned from a crushing knee injury, which kept him out of action from February 12, 2025 through November 25th, 2026 (292 days, 30 games).
Prior to that, Fernández was out of the lineup with an ankle injury from August 29th, 2024 through January 12th, 2025 (137 days, 15 games).
The young and talented Spaniard has barely played in a year-and-a-half, so this move should benefit him and allow him to compete at a higher level than the Regionalliga.
