Steven Gerrard has voiced his love for the newest true star at Liverpool. The Reds have a special one.

Liverpool spent an awful lot of money in the summer as they sought a new superstar - or three. Of course, the big signings were Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, with each of them breaking the club's transfer record.

Wirtz was the first, signing from Bayer Leverkusen as Liverpool's debut nine-figure transfer. The Reds had never spent that kind of money before, but then the German is the kind of profile they've never signed before.

But it was the Isak deal that would take the transfer record. He's not only the most expensive player in Liverpool's history but the most expensive in English football.

However, neither signing has really shown the kind of performances their fees would suggest. Wirtz has started to show it in games and there's real hope there. Isak is a unique case in that he struggled for fitness after his lack of pre-season and then suffered a brutally unfortunate injury that rules him out for the foreseeable future.

Fortunately, he wasn't the only striker Liverpool signed in the summer.

Hugo Ekitike is a genuine star

Hugo Ekitike joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt a good couple of months before Isak did. There's no question that he's the one who's hit the ground running.

The Frenchman has bagged 13 goals already this season and we imagine he'll get that number close to 20 when all is said and done. Ekitike looks like the latest superstar to grace Liverpool's first-team, in all truth, despite not carrying the same kind of hype as his record-breaking teammates.

He's certainly impressing Steven Gerrard, who said he 'loves' the player when doing punditry for TNT Sports on Wednesday evening. Ekitike scored in the Reds' 6-0 win over Qarabag with a brilliant solo goal.

"I love this kid," said Gerrard. "I think he's just going to get better and better.

"What a signing he's been so far."
