When Kennedie Shuler fouled out 30 seconds into overtime in Oregon State’s eventual win over Gonzaga last week, she had no idea what she had narrowly missed out on accomplishing.

“Yeah, no, I didn’t,” said Kennedie of being aware of what her stat line was. “I was like, ‘Oh, dang.’ But it’s okay.”

Triple doubles are rare.

Triple doubles that involve points, assists, and steals? Those hardly ever happen, but Kennedie Shuler nearly achieved that in her 17 point, 10 steal, 9 assist showing versus the Bulldogs.

The 10 steals tied an Oregon State single game record and helped Shuler become only the fourth player in the past 26 years to have a double-double with steals in the WCC.

“During the game I didn’t even know my stats. I was just having fun playing basketball with some of my really good friends,” said Shuler. “It’s not that big of a deal to me. Obviously, it’s cool. Maybe I’ll look back in 10 years and tell my kids that, but to me it’s just another game.”

Oh, and Shuler had five rebounds and three blocks in a performance head coach Scott Rueck said was one of the best he’s seen by a player in his career.

The WCC agreed with that assessment and named the junior their player of the week.

We got to break the news to her on camera on Tuesday that she had also been named one of five national players of the week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

“I guess that’s really nothing I would’ve really ever guessed or dreamed of,” said Kennedie. “I’m just honestly so grateful to be in this position. Big thanks to everybody that’s helped me grow and get to this point so far. I couldn’t do it without the army around me so, yeah, that’s really cool.”

Thursday night the point guard followed up her display against Gonzaga notching a career-high 24 points and 7 rebounds in the Beavers 61-43 win over San Diego.

It’s been a long journey for the Gresham native, who was a freshman when OSU suffered a mass exodus of players due to the Pac-12 mass exodus.

She stuck it out and now she’s starting to stick out as one of the best players in the WCC.

“So grateful. There was so much grey area in all of it, but throughout my whole life I feel like I’ve just been a loyal person and sticking to my word of what I’ve started and super happy to be here still,” said Shuler.
