EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — No. 3 Michigan took down No. 7 Michigan State 83-71 at the Breslin Center for the first time since 2018. This was the highest ranked matchup between the two teams, and this was also Michigan head coach Dusty May’s first win over Michigan State.
The Wolverines had their foot on the pedal from the start, and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. Senior Yaxel Lendeborg had 12 points in the first half, and junior Elliot Cadeau had 8 points.
MSU struggled to get anything offensively going in the first half. Redshirt sophomore Jeremy Fears Jr. had 12 of the Spartans’ 26 points heading into halftime where MSU trailed 42-26.
In the second half, the Spartans went on a 9-0 run and found their way back into it. At the 7:57 mark, senior Jaxon Kohler tied things at 55-all with a three pointer. Yet, anytime Michigan State tied it or got it within one, the Wolverines had an answer.
The Spartans shot 37% from the field, and just 17% from the 3-point line, whereas Michigan shot 44% from the field, and 38% from the 3. Lendeborg ended with 26 points, and Cadeau ended with 17 points.
Despite the loss, Fears Jr. had a career high of 31 points, beating his latest career high of 29 points against Rutgers this past Tuesday.
Michigan State will look to bounce back when they take on Minnesota on Wednesday, February 4th. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M.
