Multiple top programs challenge the competition as expectations are exceeded on Friday.
On Friday, Jan. 30, the first day of competition leaned heavily on the field events, and Brianna Utecht made the most of the opportunity. Behind consistent performances across all of her events, Utecht totaled the second-highest pentathlon score in program history.
Women’s Pentathlon Highlights
Utecht Takes Command in the Pentathlon
Junior Brianna Utetch captured first place in the women’s pentathlon with an overall score of 4017 points. Behind her in third, Sofia Wydra finished with a total of 3693 points.
For the 60-meter hurdles, Utecht won with a time of 8.67 seconds, improving on her previous meet mark of 8.71. The hurdles performance ranks eighth in program history. Wydra finished 10th, clocking 9.08 seconds to beat her previous time of 9.11 and set a personal best.
“I feel great. It was like a season opener at pentathlon, so I was happy where I was at. There’s a lot of room to improve on for the conference, so I’m really excited to see a lot of spots for improvement to get a big score,” Utetch said.
Strong Clearances in the High Jump
Utecht earned third place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.66 meters. Wydra followed closely, tying for fifth at 1.63 meters, improving on her previous jump of 1.57 and setting a personal best.
Personal Bests Highlight Shot Put
Utecht finished second in the shot put with a throw of 12.13 meters. Wydra added another personal best, recording a mark of 11.76 meters.
Big Leaps in the Long Jump
Utecht claimed first place in the long jump with a leap of 5.84 meters. Wydra placed seventh after jumping 5.35 meters.
800m Race
Utecht placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.75 after a worthwhile race to watch. Alongside her, Wydra finished fourth in the event, crossing the line in 2:27.28.
Solid Performance in the Pole Vault
Senior Anna Vedral placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.85 meters to surpass her previous result of 3.83 meters after having two wins in her event the past two meets.
“I knew that this meet was going to be competitive and I’m happy about how I placed. I think I came in sitting ninth and I finished fifth. So, I over performed where I was sitting and that’s a goal of every single meet,” Vedral said.
