A new name above Benzema — Lyon teenager stuns Europe with record goal
Teen striker Remi Himbert became Lyon’s youngest scorer in European competition during 4-2 win over PAOK in the Europa League.
French teenager Remi Himbert made club history with Olympique Lyon becoming the youngest player ever to score for the club in European match.
The record was set during Lyon’s 4-2 victory against PAOK Thessaloniki in the final stage of Europa League league phase, a result that also saw Lyon finish top of the standings in this round of the competition.
Himbert’s goal meant he overtook famous name in French football history: Karim Benzema.
Brilliant equaliser against PAOK
Lyon found themselves behind early but Himbert brought them back into the match with impressive equaliser in the 33rd minute.
The 17 year old received through ball from Afonso Moreira, controlled it smoothly with his right foot, skipped past Polish defender Tomasz Kedziora and fired powerful shot that beat goalkeeper Antonis Tsiftsis.
His finish showed calmness and quality well beyond his age.
Record ahead of Benzema
At 17 year and 334 day, Himbert broke the previous Lyon record held by Benzema since 2005.
Benzema who later became one of the world’s top forwards and won the Ballon d’Or in 2022, scored his first European goal for Lyon aged 17 year and 352 day against Rosenborg in Champions League on 6 December 2005.
Himbert’s strike was major milestone for both the player and the club’s academy pathway.
Another teen breaks the record again
Remarkably the story did not end there. Later in the same match, another Lyon teenager also wrote his name into the history books.
After scoring Lyon’s fourth goal, Alejandro Gomez Rodriguez became the youngest European goalscorer in the club’s history at 17 year and 324 day according to Stats Foot on X.
It was stunning evening for Lyon’s young generation underlining the strength of their emerging talents.
