Princess Charlotte Has Rare Encounter with Teen Future Queen in Behind-the-Scenes Soccer Moment

Princess Charlotte's special soccer Sunday with Prince William included a rare meeting with a future queen.

On July 27, the Prince of Wales, 43, brought along his only daughter to the final of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025, in which England's national team, nicknamed the Lionesses, played Spain in Switzerland. 

Prince William attended in his royal role as patron of the Football Association, English soccer's governing body, and he and Charlotte mingled with two members of the Spanish royal family behind the scenes.

Prince William and Princess Charlotte, 10, met up with Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia of Spain at the game, and a statement from the Royal Household of Spain said that they all spoke before the match began at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

Princess Leonor, 19, and Princess Sofia, 18, are the daughters of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and Leonor follows her father in the direct line of succession to the throne. Princess Leonor will become Spain’s first queen regnant since Queen Isabella II, who reigned from 1833 to 1868, when she accedes one day.

Both the Spanish royal household and Kensington Palace posted photos of the royal meeting at the Euro finals, and the montage included a sweet shot of Princess Charlotte shaking hands with Princess Leonor. Prince William had a warm hand on his daughter's back, guiding her through the royal ropes.

The moment marked the first public meeting between Charlotte and the Spanish princesses, who the Royal Household of Spain said attended in a show of support for Spain's women's national team.

The Spanish royal family's office also posted a picture of William talking with Leonor and Sofia, who are respectively called the Princess of Asturias (the feminine form for the traditional title of the heir to the Spanish throne) and Infanta Sofia.

"Bring on the second half! May the best team win, @CasaReal!" Kensington Palace captioned a photo of the royal meeting on social media. 

Cameras captured Prince William, Princess Charlotte, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia sitting in the same row during the match, closely following the action. The Lionesses were in luck at the Euro final and beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the title. 

Prince William and Princess Charlotte later appeared on the field, with William joining officials on the podium to greet both teams. 

"What a game! @Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn’t be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment @England. W & Charlotte," read a joint message from Prince William and Princess Charlotte shared to social media. 

The Prince of Wales is a vocal soccer follower and seems to be raising Princess Charlotte with a passion for the Lionesses. The dad and daughter have previously released video messages together to wish the Lionesses luck before major games and Sunday night's final was Charlotte's first public appearance at one of the team's games.
