Steven Gerrard was "devastated" that Marc Guehi didn't join Liverpool

If Guehi did join Liverpool in the summer, most of their defensive problems would've been solved.

The Englishman has been one of the Premier League's best centre-backs for some time now and with the number of injuries that the Anfield outfit have suffered, a player of Guehi's quality would've made a massive difference.

These are the thoughts of most Liverpool fans with Steven Gerrard even sharing his thoughts on the situation.

"Not too far, I think their [Manchester City's] recent signings in January have bolstered their squad," he said while live on TNT Sports.

"We were just speaking [about] how good of a signing Semenyo was and Marc Guehi.

"I was devastated that he [Guehi] never came to Liverpool in all honesty because we've had some defensive issues."

Although Guehi would've been available for nothing in the summer transfer window, the fact that Liverpool didn't even try and tempt Crystal Palace with a bid for the Englishman is mind-boggling.

Not only would the centre-back have been classed as home grown but he'd have also been the Reds' replacement for Van Dijk.

One of the Reds' main problems next season is going to be replacing their captain, and, while Giovanni Leoni may eventually get to the Dutchman's level, he's unlikely to be there by the end of next season.

And, seeing as though Ibrahima Konate's future is also still up in the air, it's unclear whether Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are going to be Slot's only centre-back options at the start of next season.

However, now that Guehi is off the market, the Reds have some tough decisions to make and, since they already have the maximum amount of non-homegrown players that they're allowed, it's going to be hard for them to find someone as good as Guehi who fits into their squad.

That is, especially since teams are going to know how desperate Liverpool are going to be.
