This is heartbreaking.
Messages Pouring in for WNBA All-Star Who Suffered Season-Ending Injury in Practice originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Golden State Valkyries have surprised a lot of fans in their first season in the WNBA. While many predicted they would struggle as a new franchise, they have exceeded expectations by putting themselves in a position to contend for the playoffs.
However, amid their bid for the postseason, they suffered a huge blow after Kayla Thornton suffered a knee injury that required a season-ending surgery.
Kayla Thornton Suffers Injury During Practice
According to the Valkyries, Thornton "suffered an injury to her right knee earlier this week in practice." The exact nature of her injury was not disclosed, but the team noted that she needed surgery to address the issue.
Now, Thornton has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the season. She is also set to "begin the rehabilitation process immediately," per the team.

Thornton's Absence a Big Blow for Valkyries
Considering how important Thornton is to the Valkyries, her absence is going to create a significant void on their roster as they try to make the playoffs.
Thornton averaged a team-high 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, along with 1.5 assists, in 22 games played for the Valkyries this season. She also made it to the 2025 All-Star Game as a reserve, further highlighting how brilliant she has been for the team.
Now that she's out, Janelle Salaun, Laeticia Amihere, Temi Fagbenle and Monique Billings should see an increase in workload.
However, there's no denying that Thornton's injury came at a bad time. Ahead of Friday's game against the Dallas Wings, the Valkyries boast a 10-12 record, good for ninth in the standings. They are just half a game behind the Washington Mystics for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Fans Feel Bad for Valkyries Star After Injury
Naturally, fans couldn't help but feel bad for Thornton, especially amid the incredible season she was having. Several others showed their support and sent their prayers for the 32-year-old forward.
"So sad for KT. Hope for a full and speedy recovery," a commenter wrote. Another one said, "NOOOO THIS IS TERRIBLE prayers up for KT!"
"Absolutely heartbreaking! Sending prayers for a healthy and speedy recovery," a fan added.
A supporter remarked, "This really hurts. I hate it for them and especially her. Thornton is most certainly one of the hardest working players in the game."
"Noooooooooooooooooooo. I hope Kayla a fast and healthy recovery. I’m gutted," a follower stated.
A sixth social media user shared, "Hoping for the speediest and most efficient of recoveries! Can’t wait to see you balling out again next season."
