The New York Mets have officially kicked off their 2025 trade deadline action, acquiring Baltimore Orioles reliever Gregory Soto for two prospects on Friday afternoon.

The 30-year-old Soto owns a 3.96 ERA in 36 1/3 innings, but his 4.5 walks per nine innings rate is concerning. Although Soto had two All-Star seasons with the Detroit Tigers, he’s posted a 4.39 ERA since the start of 2023.

Soto is on a one-year, $5.35 million contract. The Mets gave up right-handed pitching prospects Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster.

As one would expect, Mets fans had plenty to say on social media following the Soto trade.

“Not a bad move at least he throws hard,” read one comment. “Good lefty complement to [Brooks] Raley.”

"A mediocre reliever for 2 lower level prospects can’t hate it can’t love it,” another user wrote. “A 2 time all star on some bad Detroit teams.”

Numerous fans argued that Soto isn’t an exciting addition, especially given his lifetime 4.24 ERA over 354 1/3 innings.

“Not even mad about what they gave up, though Aracena has potential,” one X user commented, “it’s just that Soto isn’t very good at preventing runs, which is a pitcher’s job."

“I’m borderline with this trade because he’s had struggle moments in the past,” read another post, “but his ERA has gotten better since he was still a Detroit Tiger.”

And, while some fans poked fun at the shared last name, Gregory Soto is not related to superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

“So we have a BOGO on the SOTO’s?” read one comment.
