Auburn basketball snapped a 30-year losing streak in Gainesville on Saturday behind a strong effort from several notable players.
Revenge is sweet.
The Auburn Tigers edged No. 16 Florida on Saturday, 76-67 at Exactech Arena in Gainesville, Florida. The win was revenge for the Gators ending Auburn's Final Four run last season, and it snapped a long losing streak in Florida that dated back to the 1995-96 season.
The visiting Tigers led by as many as 18 points in the second half before the Gators stormed back to tie the game with 8:09 remaining. Auburn then adjusted and outscored Florida 20-11 for the rest of the game, securing the win. Auburn head coach Steven Pearl has challenged his team to play with more effort and grit since losing at Missouri on Jan. 14, and Saturday's performance was a reflection of the growth the team has experienced over the last three games.
“Our team three weeks ago would not have won this game,” Pearl said postgame. “That speaks to our growth as a team, our growth as a staff, and our kids’ willingness to stick together and lock into the details of the things we’ve been harping on every single day in practice. We’ve continuously gotten better as a group.”
Several impressive individual performances headlined the Tigers' win on Saturday. Here is a look at who Auburn Wire writers, as well as Auburn fans, voted as "Tiger of the Game" in Saturday's win over Florida.
Taylor Jones: Kevin Overton
Overton returned to the Tigers' starting lineup on Saturday and was efficient on offense. Overton went 3-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw stripe on his way to a 10-point outing in Gainesville. He snapped a six-game double-figure scoring streak last Saturday in the Tigers' win over South Carolina, and hopes Saturday's game at Florida will kickstart a new streak.
Phillip Jordan: Keyshawn Hall
Hall began the game by scoring Auburn's first 10 points and used that hot start to fuel a 24-point effort, leading the Tigers in the category. Saturday's performance by Hall was a "comeback" effort as Hall connected on 47% of his shots after shooting less than 40% from the field in his last three games; he shot 29% and 20% in two of those games during the stretch.
Jac Myrick: Keshawn Murphy
Keshawn Murphy continued his defensive ways in Gainesville by blocking two shots, grabbing seven defensive rebounds, and collecting two steals. Overall, he finishes this game with 16 points, nine rebounds, and one assist. He has now scored 10-or-more points in three straight games and has reached the mark in five of Auburn's SEC games.
Fan vote: Keyshawn Hall
Auburn fans have spoken, and Keyshawn Hall is the Tiger of the Game in Auburn's win over Florida on Saturday. Hall earned 73% of the vote, beating out other worthy candidates including Keshawn Murphy, Tahaad Pettiford, and Kevin Overton.
