Things are going well in the University of Miami sports spectrum right now.
The Hurricanes came one drive short of winning their sixth football national championship on Monday. The team looks set up well for another championship run in 2026, particularly if they can find a way to secure QB Darian Mensah and his Duke wideout Cooper Barkate in the transfer portal.
The basketball team is enjoying a quick resurgence under first-year head Jai Lucas. They pulled off a big road win over Syracuse on Saturday 85-76 and are firmly in the mix for a spot in the NCAA tournament at this juncture.
But the baseball team could also bring some added joy to Miami fans this year. The Canes came up a couple of runs short of making it back to Omaha last season, falling in Game 3 of the Louisville Super Regional.
Do the supposed experts think Miami will make it back? Well, we at least know where a couple of the notable outlets have the Hurricanes placed to start the season.
Both Baseball America and D1 Baseball have their preseason rankings out, and the Hurricanes found themselves inside both top 25 lists. Miami is No. 25 in Baseball America’s rankings and No. 22 for D1 Baseball.
This Hurricanes team is, in some ways, similar to what we saw last season. The runs should be there, with a number of key pieces still in place and some promising additions around them. Daniel Cuvet is one of the best hitters in the country and will be the engine that can take this team back to the College World Series. Jake Ogden and Max Galvin are back. NC State transfer catcher Alex Sosa was a big get, as was FIU 1B Brylan West. This team shouldn’t have problems getting guys across the plate.
But will the pitching be good enough? The Canes are without a Walters now, with Brian off to the professional level. AJ Cisnar is back and should lead the rotation, and Tate DeRias should be joining him there, along with Rob Evans, with perhaps Nebraska transfer TJ Coats in the mix. Richmond transfer Ryan Bilka could be the one to watch to replace Walters as the closer, although we’ll see how a laundry list of transfer options mix into both the back end of the rotation – or early mid-week starting options – as well as filling out the bullpen. Lots of unknowns heading into the season, so it’s a bit of conjecture at this point.
Still, after the end of last season, and with Cuvet still terrorizing pitchers, Omaha is a reasonable goal and dream for Canes fans this season.
Miami’s season gets underway on Friday, February 13 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
