The Chicago Cubs may only need to give up one player to the Diamondbacks in exchange for third baseman Eugenio Suárez.
What It Could Take for Cubs to Land Diamondbacks 3B Eugenio Suarez originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The first major domino of MLB's trade deadline fell to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night, as they traded for Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor in exchange for two minor-league prospects.
Naylor's move up the West Coast signaled that a Chicago Cubs trade target could be next.
MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand reported that the Diamondbacks are looking to trade away four veteran players on expiring contracts: Naylor, Eugenio Suárez, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly. Suárez, who is firmly in the National League MVP race, has been pursued the most aggressively of those four players, with fellow MLB Network insider Jon Heyman previously reporting the Cubs, Mariners, and New York Yankees have inquired with the Diamondbacks about acquiring the slugger.
If Chicago is ultimately where Suárez lands, what will the Cubs have to give up in return? The Athletic's Jim Bowden believes they can get a deal done by offering just one minor-leaguer: right-handed pitcher Jaxon Wiggins, a 2023 second-round draft pick who is the Cubs' No. 5 prospect, per MLB Pipeline's latest rankings.
"The right-hander has dominated at High A and Double A this season, posting a 2.02 ERA in 14 appearances (13 starts)," Bowden wrote. "He has 78 strikeouts and only 33 hits allowed over 62 1/3 innings."
A top-five prospect is already a hefty haul for a player who could at least spend the next two to three months in Chicago. Bowden noted, though, that the Cubs have more prospects at their disposal who might be attractive to the Diamondbacks, an organization on the doorstep of a rebuild.
"The Cubs could offer outfield prospect Kevin Alcántara first to see if they bite," Bowden wrote. "Alcántara, 23, has slashed .264/.349/.457 this season with 11 homers and nine steals in Triple A."
Alcántara, the Cubs' No. 4 prospect, got a taste of the big leagues late in the 2024 season, appearing in three games for the franchise. He went 1-for-10 at the plate with one run scored.
