Tennessee star Boo Carter may be on his way out, and Colorado fans should be watching closely.
Deion Sanders could land two-way talent before 2025 season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Just a year ago, Orlando “Boo” Carter was one of the brightest young names in the SEC. A freshman All-American with electric playmaking skills, the Tennessee native had big expectations heading into his sophomore season in Knoxville. But now, amid growing off-field issues, locker room drama, and reports of an altercation with teammates, Carter’s time with the Volunteers may be over, and Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes could be his next landing spot.
With fall camp days away, Carter is not with the Tennessee football team. CBS Sports reports he missed multiple offseason workouts, clashed with team leadership, and has been away since a confrontation on July 16. There’s real doubt he’ll return to Rocky Top, and Coach Prime is watching.
Colorado Recruited Him Once And Almost Landed Him
Boo Carter chose Tennessee over Colorado and Michigan as a high school senior. Boulder was one of his final three options, largely due to Coach Sanders’ vision and promise to use him as a two-way player. Carter starred on both sides of the ball in high school and briefly at Tennessee, while also returning punts. That versatility still makes him a perfect fit for the Buffaloes, who just lost two-way phenom Travis Hunter to the NFL.
Carter Could Still Suit Up for Colorado This Season
The transfer portal is currently closed, but that doesn’t mean Carter’s options are. Players like Wisconsin’s Xavier Lucas and BYU’s Jake Retzlaff have recently transferred outside the portal and been granted eligibility by walking on. Carter could follow a similar path to Colorado, likely backed by NIL support that would offset the loss of a scholarship.
Coach Prime’s Program Is Built for Redemption Stories
Deion Sanders isn’t afraid to take chances on elite talent, especially those in need of a reset. Coach Prime has built his brand by believing in players others gave up on. Carter has rare talent, and Sanders might be the only coach bold enough to give him a clean slate and the structure he needs to thrive.

What’s Next?
Fall camp in Tennessee starts July 29. Carter’s absence will speak volumes. If he walks and Colorado wants him, don’t be surprised to see Carter in black and gold sooner rather than later.
Boo Carter may be Coach Prime’s next big project. And if history is any guide, Colorado fans know how those usually turn out.
