A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga heavyweights Barcelona has turned down a contract termination offer on the part of the club.
That’s according to Diario AS, who point towards David Alaba as the player in question.
Stopper Alaba is for his part sidelined long-term once more at present.
Owing to a series of setbacks and muscular problems in the aftermath of a serious knee injury suffered late in 2023, the Austrian has taken to the pitch just 14 times in the last 18 months.
He played no part in Real Madrid’s recently-completed Club World Cup campaign, in the process missing out on a chance to convince manager Xabi Alonso of his talents.
Such woes have in turn given rise to inevitable speculation, pointing towards a potential summer transfer for Alaba.
As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media this weekend is anything to go by, then any such move, for the time being at least, looks unlikely.
As per a report from AS:
‘At 33, the club has put on the table the possibility of paying him part of the amount and ending his contract.’
Alaba, however, rejected this offer without a second thought, making clear that his intention is to stay put and fight for his place this season.
