Liam Rosenior has just taken his press conference ahead of the game against Crystal Palace this weekend.
It was largely good news, but there was one negative update. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Dario Essugo, having appeared in training and on the bench in recent weeks as he made his way back from surgery on a thigh injury, had vanished once again.
Rosenior gave us the update we were dreading on the Portugal midfielder.
Rosenior drops bad news bomb about Dario Essugo
Liam Rosenior takes his first Chelsea training session, with Dario Essugo present.
“Unfortunately Dario picked up a really unfortunate injury,” the new Chelsea boss said.
“He slipped in training and will be out for over a month… We have Enzo, Moi, Andrey Santos and Reece James – it’s not bad. I don’t want to bring in players that don’t enhance the group or the chemistry we’re building.”
You’ll forgive us if we have our doubts that it will be just a month. Given the record of some of our injured players in recent seasons, we’re inclined to be pessimistic.
When you combine that with Romeo Lavia, whom Rosenior said was “on the way back” without any further detail, we’re going to end up playing the majority of the season without two of our central midfield options. All of this may explain the rather surprising news from David Ornstein last night that Chelsea looking into signing Douglas Luiz, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus.
In other news…
Rosenior also spoke about Palmer’s injury status – the attacker should be fit to play tomorrow, but there are questions about whether he will, given his ongoing struggle for form and fitness.
Chelsea are now more than halfway through another season without a front of shirt sponsor. The excuses keep coming, but are we buying it?
