Yankees’ Spencer Jones trade cost revealed

Paul Skenes, anyone?

New York Yankees fans have wondered if Spencer Jones might be traded away in the interest of immediate MLB help.

But the latest reporting suggests the 6-foot-7 slugging prospect isn’t going elsewhere.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote this on X on Saturday:

“Jones (1.407 OPS in AAA) also isn’t going anywhere. The only type of player they’d trade him for is Paul Skenes, who’s off the table, and that’s obviously a very limited category.”

That’s quite the high cost. It’s unlikely a team with a Skenes or anyone in his category would trade him for a Triple-A outfielder who until a month ago was a concern as someone who struck out too much in the minor leagues.

Jones has certainly raised his stock with his recent play at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has 13 home runs in just 19 Triple-A games since his promotion. That includes a recent three-homer game at Rochester.

His name has also come up as a call-up candidate to take the place of Aaron Judge, who is going on the IL with a flexor strain injury to his right elbow. But Jones is apparently dealing with back spasms, and so even if he’s the medium-term solution, it doesn’t seem like he’d get the immediate call.

Assuming Heyman’s reporting is right, and it usually is, Jones isn’t going anywhere and is a huge part of the Yankees’ future, literally.

His 6-foot-7 height makes him an easy comparison to Judge, who is also that tall. It’s not that simple of course. Jones is a lefty swinger who has progressed through the minor leagues differently than Judge did.

But he’s officially shown that, if everything clicks, there’s massive upside. And that’s enough of a reason to keep Jones around and hopefully pair him with Judge in an exciting future.
