Thomas Müller is talking with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps rather than Los Angeles FC, media reports said on Sunday.
Negotiations between the former Bayern Munich star and the Canadian team are said to be down to the final details, the German tabloid newspaper Bild reported, citing a story by British sports journalist Ben Jacobs.
Bild had previously reported that the LA team were interested in the 35-year-old Müller, who has left Bayern after 25 years. But the paper now says that LAFC are out of the race.
There has been no official confirmation from the clubs or Müller so far.
On Saturday, Müller hinted at a move to the United States in a cowboy-themed video in which he rides a horse on what appears to be an open plain, complete with Wild West music. But maybe he meant North America.
"Twenty-five years at Bayern. Every day was great. Even if it's over now," Müller, wearing a cowboy or perhaps a Mountie hat, said in the clip.
"Today is Saturday, tomorrow is Sunday and the day after tomorrow is Monday – and then suddenly it's all over. Then it's off across the pond," he added, before riding away on the horse.
Axel Schuster, the German sporting director of the Vancouver MLS club, had previously downplayed Müller coming to the Whitecaps.
According to MLS rules, the Whitecaps would have to formally purchase the rights to sign Müller from league rivals Cincinnati. Under the so-called Discovery Rights system, FC Cincinnati holds the right of first refusal for the German veteran and 2014 World Cup winner.
