Kansas basketball coach Bill Self shared an update on freshman guard Darryn Peterson’s injury status on Thursday. Here’s what Self had to say.
LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball left its Big 12 Conference road game this week at Colorado with a 75-69 win, but not without attention on Darryn Peterson’s health.
Peterson, the Jayhawks’ star freshman guard, rolled his ankle Tuesday during the game in Boulder, Colorado. It didn’t cause him to not finish the game, but it has remained a topic of conversation in the days since as No. 19 KU (14-5, 4-2 in Big 12) looks ahead to Saturday’s road game against Kansas State. Peterson finished with 16 points and six rebounds in 31 and a half minutes of game action.
“He’s getting treatment, and he’s got a pretty severe ankle sprain, but fortunately that’s all it is, is a sprain,” Self said about Peterson on Thursday. “So, hopefully he’ll be able to go and play, but we’re not at a point where we can make a decision on that yet.”
Peterson is no stranger to injury issues during his time at Kansas, having missed nine of the Jayhawks’ non-conference games. However, he has been able to play in each of KU’s Big 12 games so far this season. Overall this season, through 10 appearances and 10 starts, he’s averaging 21.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
With or without Peterson, Kansas will be looking to end what’s become a three-game losing streak in road games against rival Kansas State. The last time the Jayhawks beat the Wildcats in Manhattan was during the 2021-22 national championship season under Self. A healthy Peterson would go a long way toward putting KU in a position to earn a win.
