Moncada spent one season with the Angels in 2025 after playing eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox and one with the Boston Red Sox. The Angels signed Moncada to a one-year, $5 million contract as a free agent last winter and are now bringing back the 30-year-old for the 2026 season.
The Angels needed a third baseman after it was reported that Anthony Rendon would be out for another season after undergoing hip surgery in February last year. The Angels restructured Rendon’s contract, and Rendon will remain within the organization but will be moved to the 60-day injured list before the season starts.
Moncada and infielder Luis Rengifo were the primary third basemen for the Halos instead of Rendon last season, with Moncada making 76 appearances at the position.
Both Moncada and Rengifo elected free agency this offseason but the Angels have only re-signed Moncada so far. Rengifo has played all seven of his MLB seasons with the Angels and spent a year in the organization’s farm system before making his MLB debut in April 2019.
Injuries have been an issue for Moncada throughout his career. He has not played in at least 100 games in the last three seasons. In 2025, Moncada slashed .234/.336/.448 with 12 homers, 13 doubles and 35 RBIs across 84 games.
Moncada suffered a right thumb sprain at the beginning of the 2025 season then dealt with lingering right knee inflammation from June through the remainder of the season.
The Angels will need Moncada to stay healthy next season as the team will likely rely on him to be the regular third baseman. Denver Guzman, who is the franchise’s No. 8 overall prospect, and utility man Oswald Peraza could also spend some time at third base in 2026.
Los Angeles may also decide to re-sign Rengifo as he is still an available free agent this offseason and would add some depth at third base. The Angels are still looking for starting pitching and could continue looking for a regular center fielder.
