‘You have to take every chance you get’ — Union Saint-Gilloise rues missed opportunity vs. Bayern Munich

FC Bayern looked vulnerable in Champions League action on Wednesday — but in the end, prevailed as so often is the case.

Union Saint-Gilloise can take some solace out of Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich for having given the Bavarians a big heaping of trouble in the first half — including a golden opportunity to score the opening goal after Promise David found himself receiving a header barely contested at the back post.

Unfortunately, David’s header was denied by Manuel Neuer, and the rebound narrowly missed bounding back into his path for the put-away. No second chance for David, and no second chance for USG either: Bayern would go on to score two quick goals and snuff out the game.

Lessons learned?

“The reason we ultimately fell short is that against such a world-class team, you have to take every chance you get,” said USG attacker Raul Florucz (as captured by FCBayern.com). “Unfortunately, in the second half, we gave them the opportunities — and they capitalized on them immediately. Despite that, we still had a slim chance.

“For the game against Atalanta, we’ll take away the importance of staying focused for the full 90 minutes and not allowing ourselves even five minutes where we’re not fully present. Against a world-class team, that kind of lapse will be punished immediately.”

USG sits in 31st place in the Champions League table as it stands, on six points. If there was a time to make a charge for the knockouts, it was today. But like so many Bayern opponents, it ends close but no cigar.
